RADIKINAS
A performance with music, theatre and images about the hidden life under the earth
Something is growing! Small roots under the earth become sprouts—and gradually something much bigger!
Radikinas (Roots) is an interdisciplinary performance with music, theatre and imagery that delves into the hidden life beneath the surface of the earth. Inspired by the beloved children’s book The Story of the Root Children by Sibylle von Olfers and the poetic textile art of Sardinian artist Maria Lai, the piece explores the deep, often unseen side of nature—the womb of Mother Earth, where life begins. Life that grows from small seeds in a vast web of roots: roots that nourish, protect, and connect.
In a poetic and imaginative way, Radikinas reflects on our bond with nature and fosters awareness for sustainability and our shared responsibility within a global ecosystem.
The musical landscape of the piece mirrors this diversity and depth. It includes original compositions inspired by traditional music from Africa and South America—such as Cumbia and Bembé rhythms—as well as folk songs from Italy and Brazil, and elements of modern club culture. These sounds are brought to life on an unusual mix of instruments, such as water drum, pandeiro, asalato, boomwhackers, kalimba, violin, flute, electric bass and three voices, offering a rich, organic soundscape that supports and expands the narrative world of Radikinas.
